Value for money is an important factor to consider when selecting the best portable solar panel. Features play a significant role in this. The Jackery 60-watt portable solar panel costs 107.99 on Amazon and 152.99 on Jackery.

The 23% cell efficiency for a 60-watt solar panel is a fantastic choice, in addition to its temperature range of between -10ºC and 65ºC gives it 7/10 score. It might seem high-priced with low-rated power, but it is worth it.

Rating on Charge Interruption Efficiency

Due to changes in weather and moving from region to region, the efficiency cannot be the same, which is called the recovery effect or charge interruption efficiency. When a cloud passed, we noted a change in the solar panel’s charging and we recorded a recovery effect of 21 seconds. We expected this due to its high conversion rate. It scored 6/10 rating.

Rating on Charging Speed

One thing we have noted is that the charging speed of a solar panel depends on the device being charged as well the port being used. This solar panel comes with two USB port, types A & C. Our 60-watt solar panel performed excellently in charging speed, attracting 8/10 rating.

Rating on Multiple Device Charging Speed

Rating on Durability

One of the most crucial things to consider when choosing a portable solar panel is its durability. Jackery 60-watt solar panel is wrapped with soft abrasion-resistant fabric which increases its robustness. Rating on durability scored 8/10.

The only downside on this factor is that the device is not waterproof.

Rating on Weight and Portability

As you can imagine 3.3 lbs. is no weight to get your muscles screaming. The 60-watt solar panel also comes with a handle built with PET material for portability with a compact design. This gave it a rating of 9/10 on weight and portability.

Rating on Charge Interruption Recovery

Weather will always be an issue, always varying from time to time, or even due to changes in regions and scenery. Charge interruption recovery or the recovery effect is important as it determines how much the solar panel takes to resume full power charge after weather changes.

During our review, it took approximately 16 seconds for the Jackery 100W portable panel to resume full charge. We owe this to its solar cells and high-conversion rate. Rating = 7/10.

Rating on Charging Speed

While the Jackery 100W portable solar panel’s USB-C/A output ports do not support PD charging, the device’s charging speed was awesome! Well, the rate of charging speed varies significantly with the device you are charging, but I didn’t have trouble charging my digital camera fully in less than 2 hours.

Rating = 7/10.

Rating on Multiple Device Charging Speed

Our 100W portable solar panel performed admirably in charging multiple devices at the same time. We give this solar panel 9/10 rating on multiple devices charging speed. After all, the general performance was optimized by its Monocrystalline solar panels.

Rating on Durability

This is one of the most important factors to consider when spending your dollar on a portable solar panel. The Jackery 100W portable panel was not affected by the bumpy roads we took during our test and it also absorbed shock well. While it might accumulate dirt, it scored 9/10 in our durability rating.

The only disadvantage is that it is not waterproof.

Rating on Weight and Portability

This goes without saying; we never felt anything lighter in the 100W solar panel category than what Jackery offers. Remember the PTE rubber on the handles? It offers an easy carry-on on top of its ergonomic design.

There are a few must-do’s to ensure that your device works appropriately and charges fast. Alternatively, you can make a mess of your investment or damage the devices you plan to charge.

There are two methods which you can use to charge your Dizaul solar charger:

Dizaul solar charger Manual/Instructions

9 Best Portable Foldable Solar Panels 2022

Are you an outdoor enthusiast and looking for the best portable foldable solar panels? If you are, you’ve come to the right page as I have the most detailed reviews and buyer guide on portable foldable solar panels available in the market.

Portable foldable solar panels are an excellent resource, especially for travelers, hikers, mountaineers, and mobile homeowners. They are also a must-have for people who love outdoor activities such as camping, as they want to keep their devices charged throughout the journey.

The devices include a design that allows them to charge via sunlight during mobile activities. Other than being foldable for portability, some come with hangers and hooks. They come with different power outputs so you can charge different devices.

Portable foldable solar panels also feature sturdy construction that makes them weather-resistant, plus shockproof features for durability. I have hand-picked and reviewed the best portable folder solar panels below:

[content-egg module=Amazon template=list]

What is a folding solar array?

Folding solar array refers to the combination of more than one solar panel to create a single device.

Advantages of foldable solar panels

Foldable solar panels might be reliant on the sun (which is sometimes absent) relatively costly, and you may have less power output. But the truth is, they have more benefits compared to the downsides. Check out these advantages of foldable solar panels:

  • Portability
  • Convenience
  • A reliable source of energy
  • Cost-friendly
  • Eco-friendly
  • User-friendly
  • Quiet
  • Easy installation

How to pick the best Portable Foldable Solar Panels

Solar panels are both a convenient and cost-friendly source of power/electricity, especially when you are in recreational and outdoor activities. The popularity of portable foldable solar panels means a difference in styles, designs, and types to suit different user needs.

Check out our buyer guide on how to pick the best portable foldable solar panel!

  • Size & Weight – It goes without saying, you need a portable solar panel for mountaineering, hiking, nature walks, backpacking, and more. The last thing you want is a heavyweight on your back or shoulders. However, you must weigh your power needs against the weight. Because the smaller a solar panel is, the less the power.
  • Durability – Outdoor activities lead you to rocky, swampy, water bodies, and dry regions depending on what turns you on. Haha! Ensure the solar panel is made from robust materials that make it weather-proof and resistant to many outdoor encounters.
  • Watt & Capacity – Watt and capacity are the determining factors of the number of devices a portable foldable solar panel can power. It also determines for how long it can go before running out of power. From 5W to 60W, 100W, 200W, and 300W, the wattage will depend on the number of devices you wish to charge, with 100W being more suitable.
  • Voltage Rate – Before you choose a solar panel, make sure you check the voltage of the batteries of your devices. Typically, voltage ranges between 5V and 18V based on the model. If you pick the wrong choice, you will damage your device’s batteries.

5V is suitable for smartphones, flashlights, and USB fans, while 12V powers devices like lamps and LED lights. 18V suits devices such as laptops, tablets, and the like.

  • Ports – Do you need this portable foldable solar panel to charge your smartphone, tablet, laptop, lamps, or flashlight? Remember to check the compatibility of its ports to your devices.

How does a portable solar panel work?

Portable solar panels comprise photovoltaic cells that collect and convert sunlight to power. The cells (infused with phosphorus & boron) are made from two layers of silicone and stitched together in thin and elastic material. The cells also feature an electric field that allows them to generate power.

When sunlight strikes the solar panel, light particles emit an electric field as it displaces the electrons from the atom. The produced power is transmitted to the inverter which changes DC power to AC power. The power is then stored or consumed by the connected devices.

Some portable solar panels also include a kickstand that you can use to reposition it as the sun moves, as well as a carrying case.

How do you secure a portable solar panel?

Portable solar panels also mean that they are delicate, not to mention their high price tag. What makes them even more fragile is if they are foldable. To secure a portable solar panel, ensure that it does not drop or fall into large amounts of water even if it is waterproof.

When you are carrying it, make sure that it is snugly but safely secured on your backpack.

FAQs

Are folding solar panels any good?

The short answer to this is yes! While their efficiency isn’t as the one for the roof-and ground-mounted solar panels, their portability makes them equally important for outdoor activities. They are also easy to move to where sunlight is, easy to operate, and quieter than gas generators.

Are folding solar panels waterproof?

It depends on the manufacturing company or the brand that makes folding solar panels. You will find them in the market but they may be highly-priced compared to others.

Is there a folding solar panel without a regulator?

Yeah, there are folding solar panels in the market that come without a regulator.

Best Portable Solar Panels for Hiking in 2020 + Buyer Guide

Best Portable Solar Panels for Hiking in 2020 + Buyer Guide

Best Portable Solar Panel for Hiking in 2020

In the recent past, the thought of a portable solar panel looked more of an anecdote than a reality. In fact, the mention of such a word seemed goofy and would leave the crowd with aching ribs(pun intended). Solar panels were delicate and unaffordable that they never crossed the thought of many.

Those who enjoy hiking, however, fully understand the importance of a gadget that can let you charge your gadgets when you are totally off-grid. I became an avid hiker a few years ago and I have come to appreciate the hobby and how experiences can be enhanced by a reliable power source from portable solar panels when hiking or camping

I have spent 30+ hours researching the very best portable solar panels that you can pick for hiking and if you are in a hurry, Goal Zero Boulder 100 is the overall best portable solar panel for hiking in 2020 because it is super lightweight making it easy to be carried in any type of hike. In addition, it has highly efficient Monocrystalline solar cells and you can rely on it for any type of hiking.

But with the grand evolution in electronics, solar tech has brought us myriad new opportunities that many people are starting to recognize they can integrate into their lifestyle. Portable solar panels are an incredible resource for travelers to charge their smartphones, hiking watches, GPS gadgets, and more.

Buying a Solar Charger for Hiking- What Is Important?

  • Type

Solar chargers you can pick for hiking are available in three types:

  • Panels with integrated battery pack – This is where the battery pack and solar panel come together (as one piece), which makes attaching them to a backpack easy. Unfortunately, the solar panels are undetectable when you do not necessarily need them, especially on short trips.
  • Panels with detachable battery pack – In this case, the solar panels come with a removable battery pack so you can leave what you do not need behind and make it more lightweight.
  • Panels only – This charger is ideal for people with a power bank, as they just connect the power bank with the solar panels and charge it with sunlight energy. Before purchasing this type, ensure it is compatible with your power bank.
  • Weight & Size

While smaller solar panels are stress-free to pack and carry, larger ones are heavy but charge fast.

  • Battery Pack

Battery packs store the solar energy that you use to charge your device. They differ in power output and storage capacity (mAh), and the higher it is, the more the power. But remember larger storage means heavyweight.

  • Attachment Options

Typically, solar panels come with attachment points that allow you to connect them firmly on the backpack.

  • Solar Panel Types

Solar panels come in two types, including semi-flexible (foldable) and rigid. Semi-flexible features a large surface area despite their small size, and you can unfold them easily to position them towards the sunlight.

  • Solar Panel Output

The higher the solar panel’s output, the more the sunlight converts to electricity per hour.

How do Portable Solar Panels for Hiking Work?

Typically, solar chargers include solar panels and a battery pack. These solar panels absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity which, in turn, charges the battery backpack. Once full, you can charge all your gadgets for long periods without the fear of draining energy soon.

That is what makes portable solar panels ideal for hikes, trekking, mountaineering, backpacking, and even camping.

Buyers Guide to the Best Solar Panels for Camping and Hiking

When purchasing portable solar panels for outdoor purposes such as hiking and camping (among others), there are several factors you should consider. From the portability to price and efficiency, these are just some of the determinants that have a major impact, plus other extras.

So what MUST you consider?

  • Portability

A solar panel’s portability depends on its weight and size. For a hiking solar panel, make sure they are thin, flexible, and lightweight. For car camping or base camps, go with the off-grid and larger camping as they are heavier and produce high power.

  • Charge Time

Some solar panels for hiking come with integrated battery systems, where the charge time depends on the battery size and panel’s power rating. Ensure you check the solar panel’s watt rating compared to the battery voltage to know the power it emits.

  • Charge Disruption Recovery

Solar panels obtain energy from direct sunlight, which means that even little exposure to shade lowers the power produced. As such, most panels include a charge disruption feature that safeguards your battery in case of interruptions.

Charge disruption recovery assesses how quickly the panels reconnect and charge again.

  • Robustness & Water Resistance

Solar panels are useful as long as they are highly reliable! Since they are electrical gadgets, the connector should be protected from continued water exposure to avoid damage.

While they are enclosed in a ruggedized fabric or hardened housing to make them durable, avoid dropping them as they would be useless.

  • Cost

Price is always the last factor I consider when reviewing products, as there are other things that matter more than cost. While solar panels come with a high price tag, there are affordable portable solar panels for personal use (10-30Watts) at $40-$100.

Wrap-Up

Hopefully, you now know what to look for in a portable solar panel for your next hiking adventure. Remember, the review above featured more than 20 portable solar panels and the featured are our best on the list.

Good luck!
